Garcia Raccoon is a fan favorite on social media whenever we share him. He is a round and large raccoon because he was not fed correctly at the roadside zoo that he came from. Now at CTR he has a balanced diet but has yet to lose the round belly. Garcia is often seen sleeping in his hammock, splashing in his pool, or hanging upside down from his enclosure roof. Like any raccoon, he is great at puzzles and any enrichment challenges we offer him.

How Garcia Came to the Sanctuary

Garcia was rescued from a closing roadside zoo in Maryland. Following years of animal welfare violations, a legal settlement with this roadside zoo (Tri-State Zoological Park) was reached, and 65 animals found safe, appropriate forever homes at reputable zoos and sanctuaries around the country. This five-day rescue, led by PETA, opens the door for us to continue our mission of rescuing wild cats and other carnivores in need while working with larger, nationwide organizations that have greater reach

Personality

Garcia's favorite thing in the world is food. His keepers have gained his trust with treats of nuts. He also enjoys shrimp and birds. Garcia is very inquisitive and likes to climb.

Description

Garcia is your typical looking raccoon, with his masked eyes and grey body.

Where in Sanctuary

Garcia currently lives in Elm Grove behind Beau Cougar and next to Santana Serval.

Roadside Zoos

Garcia came from a roadside zoo. Roadside zoos are zoos that pop up on the side of the road to draw in tourists. Most of these places lack proper facilities to adequately take care of their animals. They often breed to bring money in because the public finds it hard to resist baby animals. They rarely provide the animals with proper enclosures with enough space for the animals to live a good life. Please check out places before you visit them. Ask questions. Find out what their mission is and why they exist. Find out what their primary goal is.
